Crescendo: The Power of Music

On Sunday, May 1st at 1:00 pm, the New World Symphony will host a special film screening, Crescendo: The Power of Music. Directed by Jamie Bernstein, daughter of American composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein, the film captures the global effect of El-Sistema. The event features a special performance by Miami Music Project students and Fellows of the New World Symphony, followed by Q & A with Jamie Bernstein herself.

Leaders Orchestra Side By Side Concert at FIU

On Sunday, April 17, 2016, the FIU Distinguished Conductor Series will feature Miami Music Project Leaders Orchestra and Florida International University Symphony Orchestra with Conductor Maximiano Valdes.

The side-by-side performance will feature Wagner's Prelude to Die Meistersinger von Numberg. The concert will take place at The Herbert and Nicole Wertheim Performing Arts Center Concert Hall at Florida International University,10910 SW 17th St, Miami, FL 33172 at 4:00 p.m. Ticket prices are $15 at the door, $13 online, $10 FIU faculty/staff, and $5 students. Avner Dorman To Conduct Workshop at the Little Haiti Chapter

The Arsht Center has invited Israeli-born composer Avner Dorman to work with young musicians from all over Miami-Dade County in advance of the world premiere of his latest composition “Siklón,” which was created for the Arsht Center’s 10th Anniversary and will be performed by The Cleveland Orchestra.

Dorman's works utilize an exciting and complex rhythmic vocabulary, as well as unique timbres and colors in orchestral, chamber, and solo settings. He is an active conductor and current music director of CityMusic Cleveland Chamber Orchestra. He holds a doctorate in composition from the Juilliard School and serves as Assistant Professor of Music Theory and Composition at the Sunderman Conservatory of Music at Gettysburg College.

On Wednesday, March 9 at 3:30 p.m., Dorman will lead our Miami Music Project musicians in a fully interactive music workshop. This will take place at our Little Haiti Chapter located at Toussaint L’Ouverture Elementary School, 120 NE 59 Street, Miami, FL 33137.  We thank our partners at the Arsht Center for this wonderful opportunity.

Miami Music Project, Miami's only El Sistema-inspired program presents its 2016 Spring Concert Series. This annual event is a four-concert series highlighting nearly 500 students from first grade and up. The first of the four performances will take place Saturday, March 12, 2016, at 1 pm at the Manuel Artime Theater. This performance will celebrate the community of Little Havana which is home to one of Miami Music Project's four chapters. The following three shows will be at their respective chapters.

Stéphane Denève To Conduct Leaders Orchestra

Through the collaborative efforts of the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County's Education Department and Miami Music Project, Philadelphia Orchestra Principal Guest Conductor Stéphane Denève will conduct our Leaders Orchestra. On Thursday, February 25th, 6pm at Citrus Grove Middle School, our Little Havana Chapter, Denève will inspire our orchestra’s advanced students, ages 9-18.

Born and raised in France, Maestro Denève conducts the world's greatest orchestra and opera companies. His 2015-2016 season with The Philadelphia Orchestra includes his first tour with the ensemble, of Florida, and a two-week focus on the music of John Williams. Mr. Denève is also chief conductor of the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra and chief conductor of the Brussels Philharmonic and director of its Centre for Future Orchestra Repertoire.

Mr. Denève and the Leaders Orchestra will work on the third and fourth movements from Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 and the Prelude from Wagner's Die Meistersinger in preparation for the March 12th concert at the Manuel Artime Theater. Along with this opportunity, the Arsht Center will also provide free tickets to Miami Music Project’s young musicians to attend the evening’s concert at the Arsht Center’s Knight Concert Hall.

James Judd Leads Orchestra Boot Camp – Knight Arts Challenge Winner

Miami Music Project will have the honor of world-renowned conductor and founder James Judd to lead the Leaders Orchestra’s Boot Camp on Tuesday, February 16, 2016, at Citrus Grove Middle School, home to one of Miami Music Project’s after-school programs. The Orchestra Boot Camp, which helps 100 Miami-Dade students with intensive classical music training on teacher workdays, was awarded a $105,000 grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

This is the fourth time Knight has awarded Miami Music Project with a grant from Knight Arts Challenge, which funds the best ideas for bringing South Florida together through the arts. After a very successful launch of the first boot camp in 2015, Miami Music Project will continue this tuition-free program during Miami-Dade County Public School teacher planning days.

This program is open to existing Miami Music Project Leaders and Youth Orchestra students whose audition will be waived. Additionally, the orchestra boot camp is opened to those advanced, high school level or younger students who are required to audition.

Miami-Dade County Public Schools Recognizes Miami Music Project

Miami-Dade County Public School Board honored Miami Music Project for their outstanding commitment to transforming children’s lives with music education. On December 2nd, School Board Member, Raquel Regalado, presented the proclamation to Miami Music Project, for making music accessible to all children, establishing chapters in neighborhoods throughout Miami where children are provided music education resulting in positive social transformation.
